ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I prefer working in oil because the medium gives me time to work through problems and I like to mix my own pigments. I freely apply color, layer after layer. The color is usually very translucent. Even with 10-20 layers, I can still see the weave of the canvas upon which I weave my narratives for the viewer to translate into his own story.

I see things other people don't see perhaps because artistic seeing is in a sense a bit weird. And then I paint what I see.
I always travel with a sketch book, writing and sketching what I see in graphite (the simple pencil being one of the most versatile instruments around). I so highly value the experience of seeing new things which gives me a new point of view. My idea is to put my intuition and research onto the canvas like Paul Klee who has been a primary inspiration througout the years.
Applying layers of ideas on the same canvas is how I paint. As I paint, I begin looking for the essential similarities in color or pattern. All my senses come into being at that point, remembering everything that I can about the place, the weather, the people etc.
